الكتاب في الأصل رسالة نوقشت في قسم اللغة العربية بكلية الآداب / جامعة الموصل، وحصل به المؤلف على شهادة الماجستير بإمتياز في سنة 1983م، وكانت أول رسالة تناقش في الجامعة، ولعلّها أول رسالة تعالج هذا الموضوع في الجامعات العربية، ولربما يُعَدُّ نشرها مجازفةً بعد ما يزيد على ثلاثة عقود، فلقد أثر الزمن أفكاراً استجدّت، ومعالجات في ضوء مناهج استُحدثت، وإن بقي للأفكار، والمعالجات السابقة شيءٌ من بريق... وعندي أنّ الأفكار لا تموت!...
ومهما يكن من أمر، فإنّي مطمئنٌ أنّ في الكتاب الآن نفعاً لمن يهمّه متابعة تطور حركيّة النصّ المسرحيّ العربيّ في خضمّ التطورات الهائلة التي ألّمتْ بالوطن العربي، والرصد النقديّ الفاحص لذلك النصّ في تجسيده أثرَ أخطرِ حدثٍ، بعد النكبة، في تاريخ الأمة - أعني هزيمة حزيران - في ذلك النصّ، وهو يعايش الحدث، ويلوك مرارته!...
وكانت طبيعة البحث تستلزم إجابة أسئلة مهمّة، منها: ما موقع الفن المسرحي في الثقافة العربية قبل نكسة حزيران؟.. وكيف تعاملت المسرحية العربية مع النكسة في لحظتها؟... وما أثر مواكبة النصّ المسرحيّ السريعة للحدث في البنية الفنيّة؟... وكيف تجاوزت المسرحية وهج اللحظة الإنفعالية بالحدث بعد ذلك؟... ولماذا كانت العودة إلى التاريخ العربي، وتجسيد رموزه الإنسانية؟...
ومتى أدرك الكاتب المسرحيّ ضرورة إستلهام النماذج الإنسانية التي أسهمت في نهضة الشعوب، وتحقيق الإنتصار على الغزاة، أو الطغاة؟ وهل كان تأثر المسرح العربي بالتراث، والعودة إلى ألف ليلة وليلة، والمقامات، والسيرة الشعبية من آثار هزيمة حزيران في المسرح؟...
إنّ هذه الأسئلة، وغيرها، ومحاولة الإجابة عنها، برصد ما أتيح للمؤلف من المسرحيات في حينها، هي مدار هذا الكتاب.
