لطالما كان طموح علم النفس أن يشرح السلوك ويفهمه ليتمكن من توقعه . وإذا تمكن من فهم " ما قبل السلوك " ، لن يكون صعباً عليه أن يجد ما يفعله ليتحكم بهذا السلوك . وقد يحدث أحياناً أن تتم دعوة علماء النفس أحياناً للتحكم بقضايا انتشار الإنحرافات أو السرقة أو الإدمان الكحولي . وكما كانت دراسة الفيزياء مسؤولة عن إنتاج الطاقة النووية والقنبلة النووية ، فقد يُستخدم علم النفس لغايات مختلفة تماماً عما كان يهدف إليه . ومن هنا يأتي السؤال التالي : هل تُعتبر الأبحاث النفسية خطيرة لأنه يعلّم علماء النفس الأذكياء كيف يتحكمون بسلوكنا ؟
ما يثير الدهشة أنه مع اهتمام وسائل الإعلام الكبير بالقضايا النفسية ، يبقى عامة الناس جاهلين جداً بهذا الموضوع . ويبدو من المؤكد أن هؤلاء غير قادرين على إجراء تقييم مستقل للإدعاءات المطروحة حول الملاحقات العلمية الزائفة ؛ كدراسة الخطوط ، والجراحة النفسية ، وتأثير الإعلانات على رغبتهم في الشراء وما إلى ذلك . ويتمسك الناس بالكثير من خرافات علم النفس الشعبي على الرغم من وجود الأدلة القوية على عدم صحتها أو على نقيضها تماماً .
