في كتابه هذا، ينطلق الدكتور هادي حمودي من تساؤل هام: هل الحسد حقيقة قائمة؟ أم مجرد نظريات؟! وما راي العلم الحديث به؛ وما موقفه من مجريات حوادثه وواقعاته.
وللإجابة على هذه الأسئلة، وحتى لا يختلط العلم بالخرافة، ولأن الحسد مذكور في الكتب السماوية أو معروف في جميع ثقافات الأمم والشعوب، فإن التساؤل عن حقيقته يكون أمراً مشروعاً.
وهكذا يحاول هذا الكتاب الإجابة على ظاهرة الحسد على اعتبار أنه لا يخلو الإنسان من أن يكون حاسداً أو محسوداً، وربما جمع الصفتين إلى ذاته، من هنا تصبح أهمية الكشف عن حقيقة (الحسد) كواقع معاش، والبحث عنه، بالقول: أهو موجود فعلاً وأن ضحاياه هم ضحايا قوة مختفية في نفس الحاسد أو العائن (أي الذي يصيب بعينه؟) أم إنه لا يعدو كونه أمراً متخيلاً وأن ضحاياه هم ضحايا الصدفة لا ضحايا حاسد وعائن؟"
وبناءً على ما تقدم يذكر المؤلف بعض الحوادث والمشاهدات منها شخصية ومنها مروية عن الآخرين، مع ذكر الإحتمالين: احتمال كونها مجرد صدفة، واحتمال كونها نتيجة الحسد، ثم يعمد إلى تمهيد أرضية البحث ببيان معنى الحسد في اللغة وعلاقة اللفظة بما يقاربها من المفاهيم، ثم موقف القرآن الكريم منه (الحسد)، وكيف تعامل النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم معه. وانتقل بعد ذلك إلى (الحسد في الأدب) نثره وشعره وأمثاله والحكم الواردة بشأنه، وعقد فصلاً بحث فيه (الحسد ومعالجته .. تفسيرات ورؤى) ينقل مواقف القدماء منه، أما عن رأي العلم الحديث، فاستعان المؤلف بعلم النفس والطب النفسي، والممارسين للإرشاد الإجتماعي، وصولاً للمعالجة النفسية ...
