فرنان بروديل (24 أغسطس 1902 - 27 نوفمبر 1985) مؤرخ فرنسي وزعيم من زعماء مدرسة أنال في التاريخ. ركزت دراساته على ثلاثة مشاريع رئيسية، تمثل كل منها عدة عقود من الدراسة المكثفة: البحر الأبيض المتوسط (1923-1949 ومن ثم 1949-1966) والحضارة والرأسمالية (1955-1979) والهوية الفرنسية غير المكتمل (1970-1985). من أقواله: -لا يمكن للمؤرخ أن يكون على قدم المساواة إلا مع تاريخ بلده, فهو يفهم بشكل يكاد يكون غريزيا تطوراته المفاجئة وتحولاته, تعقيداته وجوانب أصالته وضعفه, ومهما كانت ثقافة المؤرخ عظيمة, فإنه لا يمكنه التمتع بهذه الميزة عندما يرحل إلى ساحة أخرى-

بروديل يعلّم التاريخ:
في بداية السّتّينيات من القرن العشرين ، تمّت استشارة بروديل حول الإصلاحات التي يمكن إدخالها على برامج التّاريخ للتّعليم الثّانوي فإذا هو ينجح في إدراج دراسة الحضارات الكبرى في الأقسام النّهائيّة، بعد أن وافق على وضع هذا الكتاب المدرسي الذي نشره سنة 1963، ثم أدرج فيه بعض الإضافات سنة 1966. وإذا كان هذا الكتاب لم يفقد شيئاً من قيمته العلمية فإن فائدة الرجوع إليه تزداد في السياق التاريخي الحالي.
إنّ الحضارة المُعرَّفة، تباعاً، بالاعتماد على المجال وعلى المجتمع وعلى الاقتصاد وعلى الذّهنيات الجماعيّة، تتماهى، هنا، مع "المدى الطّويل" الذي يرى بروديل التاريخ من خلاله. هكذا تمّ استعراض حضارات الإسلام وأفريقيا السّوداء والشّرق الأقصى والغرب.
هل نحن أمام مشروع أوّلي للتأريخ للعالم؟ إنّ " قواعد لغة حضاراتِ" عالمِ اليوم تهيّء لهذا المشروع وتكمّله من زوايا مختلفة.
