المداخل إلى المدينة كثيرة من عدن إلى بيروت، مروراً بصنعاء، سواء تُتُبعت في تحولات مؤسسة السوق أو الجامع أو التصورات المدينية، وقد تبلغ المدينة من طرق ملتوية، وتحاك قصتها وروايتها لتُمد الجسور بين أمكنة الخيال وأقاليم السياسة، بين وجوه الأسطورة ووجوه السلطة، وعلى خلاف الأحجية المركبة، ليست المدينة أجزاء يعاد تركيبها لرسم صورتها الكاملة، فهي ليست معطى كلياً.
فالباحث في أنثروبولوجيا المدينة متسكع منهجي، ونصير صدف السورياليين الموضوعية، ومنقب عن التيارات الخفية التي تحول الجموع المدينية إلى مشائيين ملهمين.
ما يجمع بين المدن الثلاث أقرب إلى تظاهرات العولمة منه إلى خصائص ثقافية مشتركة بينها، ولكن ضعف الصبغة المشتركة بينها لا ينفي أوجه الشبه بين هذه المدن.
وشكل المدينة وروحها رهن نوع علاقاتها مع الخارج، القريب والبعيد، وليست العولمة سوى وجه من وجوهها، شأن محيطها الريفي أو مكانتها المحلية أو الإقليمية، ووجوه المدينة كلها حاضرة في أكشاك الصحف، وفي طراز هندسة مبانيها، وطرق المواصلات، وأنماط الإجتماع، والعلاقات بين الجنسين، وخيار إبراز أمور في الدوائر العامة، والتستر على غيرها، ومعالم الثراء والفقر، وإشارات الحميمية والفرادة.
