لقد ظلت الدراسات النقدية حتى وقت قريب تتجه في معالجاتها للنصوص القصصية في الجزيرة العربية نحو الإتجاه التاريخي، الذي يرصد تطور القصة القصيرة مرحلياً، أو يُعْنى بما تصوره تلك النصوص من مضامين بيئية أو إجتماعية أو أخلاقية، من شأنها أن تقدم قراءة إنطباعية للإعلان عن صدور مجموعة أو كاتب جديد، فإذا ما طرأ موضوع كـ"الإغتراب"، انتقلت كتلة النقد إلى غير بيئات الجزيرة العربية، مثل مصر والعراق وسوريا والمغرب العربي.
لقد تعرضت منطقة الجزيرة العربية منذ الستينيات من القرن الماضي، وخلال العقود الأربعة الأخيرة منه، لعدد من الظروف المتشابهة على كافة الأصعدة: السياسي، والإقتصادي، والإجتماعي، والثقافي.
فكان الإنتقال إلى إقتصاد النفط، وتحول المجتمع إلى المدينة وإطلاع القاص في الجزيرة العربية على النقد الحديث والفلسفات المعاصرة، كما كان لحرب الخليج أثراً كبيراً على الأعمال السرديّة التي تأثرت بأجواء نفسيّة مشحونة لإنتاج الجديد في الكتابة القصصيّة، وهذا ما يدور عليه هذا الكتاب.
