أجمع العرب منذ القدم على ضرورة العناية بعلم النسب الذي عدوه علمأًَ جليلاً رفيعاً، يكون به التعارف وبه تتعاطف الأرحام الواشجة، وعليه تحافظ الأواصر القريبة، ويجمع أهل العلم بالنسب على أن أي قبيلة من قبائل العرب في الزمن الحاضر تنتسب إما لربيعة بن نزار، أو مضر بن نزار أو حمير بن سبأ أو كهلان بن سبأ.
وهذا الكتاب يتناول بالدراسة قبيلة ربيعة التي اشتهرت منذ الجاهلية وحتى يومنا هذا بمكانة عالية. حيث يبين المؤلف أن ربيعة أحد جزمي الفرع العدناني من العرب، إذ يذكر الرواة أن نزار بن معد ولد من الأولاد: إياد، وأنمار، وربيعة، ومضر، وغلى هؤلاء يرجع سائر ولد نزار. وقد عرض الكاتب لبطون ربيعة على مدى الأزمنة، ولما مرت به منتقياً الشعر الدال على ذلك من بطون الكتب والدواوين.
وقد وضع المؤلف في خاتمة الكتاب فهارس عامة للأعلام والأيام والوقائع والقبائل والشعوب والفرق والأماكن.
