"شذا الإملاء" كتاب تعليمي يتمحور حول قواعد الإملاء في اللغة العربية، جمع مؤلفه الأستاذ حسين الفرج مادته من مظانَّها ومن أصولها العلمية التي كتبها علماؤنا السّابقون كالرضي والسيوطي وابن قتيبة وآخرون، أما أهم ما تميز به هذا الكتاب على سائر الكتب الإملائية، هو جمعه شتات الآراء الإملائية حول القضايا الإملائية المختلفة عليها والمقارنة بينها وترجيح بعضها على الأخرى، كما أنَّ فيه سرداً للمهارات الإملائية التي يحتاجها الكاتب العربي في كتابته بأسلوب يحاكي ما في نفسه؛ وهذا شيء ناجم عن خبرة طويلة لمؤلفه في مجال التدريس وإلقاء المحاضرات والدورات التدريبية، مع التمييز بين ما يحتاجه المتعلم وبين ما يحتاجه الباحث أو المتخصص وذلك بعبارة (زيادة وتفصيل)، حيث ما يطلبه المتعلم يكون ضئيلاً مقارنة بما يطلبه الباحث والمتخصص، وأهمّ ما يميز هذا الكتاب أيضاً أنه وفي ظلّ الآراء العلمية حول قاعدة إملائية معينة، يذكر المؤلف "ما تتبناه مناهجنا في المملكة العربية السعودية؛ كي يعرف الأخوة والأخوات ما تسير عليه مناهج بلادهم، أو يطّلع الأشقاء العرب على رأي مناهجنا حول تلك القضية الإملائية، كما أنه مدعّمٌ بتدريبات تقيس مستوى إتقان المتدرب أو المتدربة على أن يجد إجابتها في ملحق الإجابات آخر الكتاب...".
وبالاستناد إلى ما تقدم انقسم العمل في هذا الكتاب إلى ستة فصول؛ وقد جعل المؤلف الفصل الأول للهمزة بأنواعها الثلاثة: الوصل والقطع، والمتوسطة، والمتطرفة، مع ذكر مقدمة لقضية الهمز في اللغة العربية، والفصل الثاني لقضية كتابة الألف اللينة في آخر الكلمة، والفصل الثالث للتاء المربوطة والتاء المفتوحة واللام القمرية واللام الشمسية، والفصل الرابع للفصل والوصل بين الكلمات، والفصل الخامس لمناقشة قضية الحذف والزيادة، والفصل السادس والأخير لعلامات الترقيم، ثم ملحقاً لإجابات تدريبات الفصول السابقة.
