حاول المؤلف في هذا الكتاب تقصي ميدان التعليم بطريقة شاملة وموجزة ومحكمة على قدر الإمكان، بحيث يستفيد منه المهتمين بعلم النفس بشكل عام والتعلم بشكل خاص.
ويقع الكتاب في عشرة فصول: يتناول الفصل الأول منها تعريف التعلم وبعض النظريات التي تعتبر أساس النظريات المعاصرة.
ويتناول الفصل الثاني نظرية التعلم الإجرائي بما لها من آثار واسعة على علم النفس بشكل عام والتعليم المدرسي بشكل خاص. ولذلك جاء الفصل الثالث تطبيقاً لمبادئ التعلم الإجرائي في التربية.
ويتناول الفصل الرابع نظرية تجهيز المعلومات وما يرتبط بها من حفظ المعلومات واسترجاعها.
وقد خصص الفصل الخامس للتعلم ذي المعنى ونظرية المخطط.
ويتناول الفصل السادس نظرية التعلم افجتماعي المعرفي، والعوامل الإجتماعية المؤثرة في التعلم.
وينتقل الفصل السابع إلى موضوع ما وراء المعرفة وهو من أحدث مجالات التعلم، يهتم هذا المجال بمعرفة الناس بتعلمهم والتجهيزات المعرفية التي يمرون بها، وكذلك كيفية تنظيمهم لتعلمهم لزيادة قدرتهم على الحفظ والتذكر.
أما الفصل الثامن فيتناول انتقال أثر التعلم وحل المشكلات.
يلي ذلك الفصل التاسع الذي يتناول الدافعية وعلاقتها بالتعلم.
أما الفصل الأخير فيتناول موضوعاً هاماً لعملية التدريس.
