يعتبر موضوع التعلم محور الاهتمام الرئيسي في العملية التعليمية، إذ على التعرف على أساس شروطها العامة وقوانينها يحدد كثير من معالم هذه العملية.
وقد وجه الكتاب عنايته لهذا الجانب الأساسي فبدأ بتحديد الأسس أو الشروط العامة التي تنبني عليها عملية التعلم. ويتضمن الباب الأول هذا الجانب فيعالج الفصل الأول معنى التعلم والفصل الثاني طرق دراسته والفصل الثالث شروطه والفصل الرابع تحسينه، كما يعالج مشكلة أساسية ترتبط بالاستفادة من نتائج التعلم في المواقف الأخرى، وهي مشكلة انتقال أثر التعلم وذلك في الفصل الخامس.
أما الباب الثاني فيختص بدراسة نظريات التعلم. ذلك أن المعنى الحقيقي للتعلم لا يأتي إلا بنتيجة التعرف على النظرية الكاملة التي وراءه، ومن ثم كان من الضروري الإلمام بعدد من النظريات الأساسية التي كان لها فضل الكشف عن كثير من الحقائق الخاصة بهذه العملية.
ويختص الباب الثالث بالتطبيقات التربوية على عملية التعلم. فالغرض الأساسي من دراسة هذه العملية غرض وظيفي يهدف إلى الاستفادة من الأسس العامة والنظريات في مجالات العمل المدرسي التي تتطلبها. وهي ناحية قلما تتعرض لها كتب التعلم التي تهتم في العادة بالمبادئ والنظريات.
