يعد هذا الكتاب "مقاتل الطالبين" لأبي الفرج الأصفهاني كنز من كنوز الدب والتاريخ ترجم فيه أبو الفرج لنيف ومائتين من شهداء الطالبين، فأحسن الترجمة وصوّر بطولتهم تصويراً أخاذاً يخترق الألباب، ويمتلك المشاعر وذكر فيه من خطبهم ورسائلهم وأشعارهم، ومحاوراتهم، وما قيل فيهم وبسببهم من روائع الشعر والنثر، وما لا يجده مجموعاً في كتاب سواه، إلا أن يكون منقولاً عنه، أو ملخصاً منه، فهو خير كتاب أخرج للناس في تاريخ الطالبين وأدبهم، ويجد فيه العلماء طلبتهم، والأدباء ضالتهم، ويجد فيه القاصون منهم مادة خصبة لإنتاجهم الفني، وهو من أنفس الكتب التي تغذي العقول والقلوب والأرواح جميعاً.
وأوجز ما يقال في وصف مقاتل الطالبين: أنه دائرة معارف لتاريخ الطالبين وأدبهم في القرون الثلاثة الأولى، ولأهمية هذه الطبقة اهتم السيد أحمد صقر بشرح النسخة التي بين أيدينا وبتزويدها بتحقيق لطيف هدفه توضيح ما أبهم من عبارات المخطوطة وما أشكل من معانيها.
