لم يمارس العالم العربي السعادة أو النجاح خلال السنوات الخمسين الأخيرة، وقد زادت حدَّة الشعب وقسوته وشقاؤه وخيبة آماله مؤخراً، وكما صاغ الفكرة لي أحد السفراء العرب في لندن، فإن الناس "فقدوا إيمانهم بحكوماتهم، هناك إحساس بالفشل، وخلق ذلك الإحساس فجوة بين الحاكم والمحكوم، ثمّ أدى ذلك إلى إنخفاض الثّقة بالنفس، والعداوة تجاه التأثير الأجنبي، فالعالم العربي - ومنذ سنوات عديدة - يعاني من أزمة تجاه ذاته".
عندما أدلى السفير بتلك الملاحظات، وهو سفير الجزائر، كان في ذهنه الأحداث المأسوية التي حدثت أخيراً في بلاده، لقد أدّى الفساد الواضح في النظام السياسي إلى دفع الجماهير لرفض الحاكم وإعتناق دعوة الجبهة الإسلامية للإنقاذ، ليس بالضرورة لأنها دعوة دينية، ولكن لكون الإسلاميين يشكّلون فريق المعارضة القوية والمنظّمة الوحيدة على الساحة.
لقد أظهرت النتائج منذ عام 1988 أن محاولات الحكومة الــ belated للسماح بالديموقراطية أدّت إلى نجاح الإسلاميين ثم الإعتقالات الجماعية وإلغاء الإنتخابات، ثم إغتيال الرئيس بوضياف وفرض الحكم العسكري الإنقلابي على يد الضباط الفرانكوفويين.
