ولد سليمان العليان - رحمه الله - في سنة 1918م تقريباً، وكان ذلك في عنيزة التي لم تكن تزيد آنذاك عن مدينة صغيرة جداً في وسط نجد، وإنطلاقاً من الوضع الفقير القاسي الذي كانت تعيشه المملكة العربية السعودية في فترة ما قبل النفط، أسس عملاً تجارياً جعله واحداً من أكثر رجال الاعمال نجاحاً في العالم.
ويحكي كتاب "من عنيزة إلى وول ستريت" قصة طفولة سليمان العليا ودراسته في البحرين وعمله المبكر في شركة كاليفورنيا ستاندرد العربية للزيت، وكانت هذه الشركة المكان الذي بدأ فيه إتصاله بمجال الأعمال الامريكية والغربية وصار مفتوناً بالطرق التي يعمل بها الإقتصاد الصناعي القائم على السوق الحرة، وهو ما جعله يصمم على تأسيس عمل تجاري خاص به.
وبدأ ذلك الطريق في سنة 1947م بالعمل مقاولاً في مشروع التابلاين، وهو مشروع لمد الأنابيب التي تحمل الزيت السعودي إلى البحر الأبيض المتوسط، ثم أخذ بالتدريج ينوع من نشاطاته التجارية، حيث بدأ بالإستثمار في أسواق نيويورك للأسهم.
ثم أخذ خلال الطفرة البترولية التي حدثت في السبعينات الميلادية، يندمج أكثر فأكثر في المجال الأمريكي الأوروبي، ليس بوصفه مستثمراً فقط، بل بوصفه عضواً في مجالس إدارات الشركات ومجالس الجامعات وغيرها من دوائر الأعمال، وأصبح بشكل يفوق أي واحد من رجال الأعمال العرب عضواً بارزاً في دوائر الأعمال التجارية الغربية.
وفي السنوات العشرين الأخيرة تزايدت إستثماراته وتنوعت بشكل كبير جداً، إذ صار مالك أسهم مهمّ في أكبر البنوك.
