أدب الإملاء والاستملاء كتاب ذكر فيه مصنفه ما يحتاج إليه المملي والمستملي من التخلق بالأخلاق السنية والإقتداء بالسنن النبوية وقد جعله مختصراً حيث اقتصر فيه على إيراد ما لا بد منه وما لا يستغنى عنه المحدث الألمعي والطالب الذكي. وقد افتتحه بالكلام على علم الحديث لأنه أشرف العلوم بعد العلم بكتاب الله سبحانه وتعالى، إذ الأحكام مبنية عليهما ومستنبطة منهما.
ثم يعرج المؤلف على أدب المملي، وما ينبغي للمحدث من إصلاح هيئته وأخذه الأهبة لرواية الحديث. إذ يستحب أن يكون المملي في حال الإملاء على أكمل هيئته وأفضل زينة ويتعاهد نفسه قبل ذلك بإصلاح أموره التي تجعله عند الحاضرين من الموافقين والمخالفين.
وبالنظر لما تضمنه هذا الكتاب في فوائد جمة فقد اعتنى "أبو عبد الرحمن محمود" بتهذيبه واختصار أسانيده، وبتخريج نصوصه حيث اهتم بعزو أحاديثه المرفوعة والآثار المرموقة الواردة فيه إلى مصادرها من كتب السنة والآثار مع انتقائه الثابت منها، وحذف الضعيف وما دونه، كما واهتم المحقق بتفسير وشرح بعض الألفاظ القريبة التي قد يخفى معناها على بعض القراء وبالتقديم للكتاب بترجمة للمؤلف ولمتن كتاب أدب الإملاء والاستملاء.
