تكمن أهمية الكتاب أنه خلاصة خبرة عالم ذائع الصيت ألا وهو الإمام السمعاني صاحب كتاب الأنساب، وقد جاء الكتاب نتيجة خبرة مديدة في طلب العلم وتعليمه فيما بعد.
ومن خلال إطِّلاعنا على المؤلفات الكثيرة عند علماء المسلمين، لم نجد كتاباً تناول هذا المجال سوى الإمام السمعاني، وإذا جاز لنا أن نقول: فإن هذا الكتاب يتفوق على كل ما ألف حول موضوعه عند علماء اليونان، لأن اليونانيين اهتموا بالخطوة العريضة.
أما الإمام السمعاني، فإنه اهتم بأدق التفاصيل الشكلية من حيث المظهر العام وقص الشوارب، واللحى، والشعر وقص الأظافر، والعناية بالنعل والحذاء إلى جوهر المُمْلي والطالب، حيث أكد خطوات التعليم بدءاً من الفرد وإنتهاء بعلاقته بالمجتمع، والخلاصة، أنه اهتم بالسلوك الشخصي، والسلوك العام ضمن تدرج منطقي.
ولولا أهمية الكتاب لما قام المعالم المستشرق الألماني (Max weisweiler) بتحقيق الكتاب ونشره في النصف الثاني من القرن الماضي.
ويصلح الكتاب أن يقدم كأطروحة لنيل درجة الماجستير أو الدكتوراه لإحدى كليات التربية في الوطن العربي التي وللأسف الشديد، أدارت ظهرها لمثل هذا الكتاب العظيم.
