يبدأ الكتاب بمقدمة تشتمل تعريفات مفاهيمية حول الحرب والعنف والجهاد ، ويتابع البحث في تاريخ العنف عند الشعوب ولا سيما : اليهود والنصارى والعرب الجاهليين ، ثم ينتقل إلى المعنى العام للجهاد وموقعه في النظام الإسلامي ، ويناقش خلاله المؤلف فكرة الحرب والعنف ، والدعوة والدولة ، وطبيعة علاقة المسلمين بغيرهم ، ثم يسلّط الضوء على أحكام الحرب والجهاد ومنها : في كيفية بدء الحرب والجهاد ، في الأمان ، في أثر الحرب في العلاقات الدولية السياسية ، وفي شؤون الأسرى والجرحى والمرضى والقتلى ، وفي أثر الحرب والجهاد في أشخاص وأموال العدو ، وعند انتهاء الحرب .
وأخيراً يحيط المؤلف بموقع العنف في الحرب والجهاد ، فيتحدث عن العنف وأهداف الحرب والجهاد ، ويدرس العنف في شروط وأحكام الجهاد في الإسلام ، ويُتبع ذلك بقانون إسلامي لتمدين الحرب ودفع العنف .
