كتاب فلسفات النفي تأليف هربرت ماركوز. يقول الكاتب عن كتابه هذا: كتبت أكثر المقالات التي جمعت هنا، في الفترة التي تمتد من 1914 إلى 1938، وقد خرجت خلال عملي في "مركز البحث الاجتماعي" بنيويورك وتشكلت خلال مناقشتي مع زميلي ماكس هوركهايمر، وكان إذ ذاك مدير المركز، ومع العاملين بالاشتراك معه، وقد سمحت بإعادة نشرها دون تغيير، فما من تنقيح يمكن أن يعبر الهوة التي تفصل الفترة التي كتبت فيها والفترة الحالية، في ذلك الوقت لم يكن واضحاً أن القوى التي قد خزمت الفاشية بسبب تفوقها التقني والاقتصادي ستدعم وتقوي البناء الاقتصادي الذي أنتج الفاشية، ويظل السؤال مفتوحاً عما إذا كان هذا الغزو يمكن أن ينتج قوى تاريخية أكثر تقدماً وعمومية، إن المجتمع الرأسمالي لم يكشف بعد كل قوته وكل عقلانيته، ومصير الحركة العمالية لا يزال "غير مؤكد" وأولى هذه المقالات تنتهي بعدم التأكد هذا، وهو أمر شائع فيها كلها، حيث أن الأمل في أن يتم قهر الفاشية بالقوى (أو بالأحرى إن دمارها سيؤدي إلى إطلاق القوى) التي ستمكن من قيام تجمع أكثر إنسانية وعقلانية، لأنه إذا كانت هناك مسألة لم يكن مؤلف هذه المقالات وأصدقاؤه على تأكد منها، فهي الفهم بأن الدولة الفاشية هي مجتمع فاشي، وأن العنف التسلطي الشمولي والعقل التسلطي الشمولي يصدران عن بناء المجتمع القائم الذي يدخل دور قهر ماضيه الليبرالي ويجسد نفيه التاريخي، وهذا يلقى على عاتق النظرية النقدية أو الناقدة للمجتمع مهمة توحيد الاتجاهات التي تربط الماضي الليبرالي بتدميره التسلطي الشمولي
