الكتاب يكشف بصورة ساخرة، العديد من المشاكل والأخطاء التي يقع فيها المحبون والتي تؤدي، بلا وعي، لإفساد العلاقة بأكملها.. ففي نص "خبير في الحب" مثلاً تقول الكاتبة: "الحكاية ببساطة أننا كثيراً ما نحب دون ان نعرف كيف نحب.. أن أحبك، هذا لا يعني أنني وشقعت شيكا على بياض للأبد. للأسف العلاقات الإنسانية لا تأتي ومعها شهادة ضمان.. قد تنتهي مدة الصلاحية دون أن تدرك.. وقد تحاول إصلاح عطب ما فترد الشركة بأنها غير مسئولة عن الأعطال الناتجة عن سوء الإستخدام".
الكتاب يضم ثلاثة أجزاء: عن العشاق لا تسألوني، الورد والبطيخ، الشغل وسنينه ويتناول مجموعة من العلاقات الإنسانية بتناقضاتها وتعقيداتها بشكل ساخر، عبر العديد من النصوص، منها: خبير في الحب، ينشكوا في لسانهم، الحبيبة الهبلة، أول يوم شغل، صديقة زوجتي.. وغيرها تقول الكاتبة في مقدمة الكتاب: البدايات لا تؤدي دوماً للنتائج المتوقعة، هذا ما يجعل الكثيرين يسقطون في فخ الاكتئاب.. يعني تزرعها تفاحاً تطرح بطيخاً.. أو بالأصح تزرعها ورداً وتطرح صباراً.. ثم تقول: "عموما من قال إن البطيخ غير مفيد؟ أقصد أن النهايات غير المتوقعة قد تصلح بدايات جديدة لمراحل أكثر نضجاً".
"الورد والبطيخ" هو االإصدار الخامس لرحاب إبراهيم بعد أربع مجموعات قصصية: "شباك متحرك"، "بنت عمرها عشر دقائق"، "أوطان عابرة"، حيل للحياة"، "إلى الورد عطره وملمسه لونه ولمعة الندى على جبينه الومضة التي يتركها في النفس فلا تذبل أبداً " بهذا الإهداء تستهل "رحاب إبراهيم " كتابها الجديد: "الورد والبطيخ".
