لما كان الحديث والسنة يشكلان ثاني سند لفهم لدين بعد القرآن الكريم، فقد كان له السهم الأوفر في التوصل إلى الينبوع الصافي للحقائق والمعارف الدينية، واستنباط الأحكام الشرعية. وقد حثّ الأئمة المسلمين على تعلمه وتعليمه وتدوينه. وهذا ما ضاعف من أهميته وزاد في ازدهاره. وكانت الجهو التي بذله العلماء والمحدثين وكتاب الحديث وحفاظه في مجال حفظ، وتدوين وضبط، وجمع، وتصحيح، سبباً لنشر وازهار العلوم المرتبطة به كعلم الرجال، والدراية، ومصطلحات الحديث، وفقه الحديث، وغريب الحديث، غايتها التوصل إلى معرفة يقينية لهذا المصدر الفريد من نوعه.
وتشهد الآثار الكثيرة التي خلفها السلف الصالح في مختلف ميادين علوم الحديث على مدى الجهود والمساعي التي بذلها لعلماء والمحدثون المسلمون في القرون الماضية للحفاظ على هذا التراث النفيس، ولأجل هذه الغاية يأتي العمل بهذا الكتاب في محاولة لاستخراج هذه الآثار من رفوف المكتبات وإزاله عنها غبار الزمن وتقديمها إلى الأوساط العلمية للانتفاع من فوائدها.
والكتاب "توضيح المقال في علم الرجال" من تأليف العالم والفقيه الأصولي المتبحر الملاّ عليّ كني، ويعتبر من الآثار القيمة والنادرة في علم الرجال والدراية، الذي يأخذ نصيبه من الاعتناء والتحقيق في هذه الطبعة. حيث قام المحقق أولاً بمقابلة النسختين الموجودتين للكتاب ضابطاً الاختلافات، ثم مخرجاً الأقوال التي ذكرها المصنف مع الإشارة إلى مصادرها الثانوية، وضابطاً النص ومقوماً له والحفاظ على سلامة العبارة، حيث أن بعض العبارات كانت مغلفة ومشوشة في كلتا النسختين، وذلك بعد مراجعة المصادر الرجالية (أي المهتمة بعلم رجال الحديث) المهمة لفهم العبارة وإدراكها.
