يبحث هذا الكتاب في المسائل المشتركة بين أصول الفقه وأصول الدين والتي هي ليست من أصول الفقه كما يقول المؤلف وهي: من مسائل الكلام وتحتاج إلى إيضاح وبسط.
وفي هذا المجال كشف المؤلف عن أقوال ومفاهيم قررها المتكلمون والمصنفون في مسائل هذا العلم أو ذكروها عرضاً ضمن تلك المسائل، وهي أقوال: "مخالفة لما استقر عليه الأمر الأول ويحسبها قراء هذا العلم أنها من الحقائق المسلمة المفروغ منها. وكثير من هذه المسائل الكلامية التي ذكرت في أصول الفقه لم تقرر على وجهها الصحيح، أو ذكرت على الوجه الصحيح لكنها بنيت على أصل مخالف للأصل الذي دلَ عليه القرآن والسنَة والذي مضى عليه الصحابة وأئمة السلف..".
لذلك كله، عمل المؤلف على إقرار هذه المسائل حسب ما جاءت في كتب الأصول، ثم عرضها مع بيان أصل المسألة المشتركة وذكر الخلاف الوارد فيها، وبيان سببه، وبيَن بعد ذلك وجه الحق الذي يدل عليه الكتاب والسنَة، ومن أمثلة هذه الاستدلالات والتقريرات المحيرة في كتب الأصول والتي يشرحها الكتاب: الاستدلال على أن العبد مجبور على فعله بوقوع التكليف بما بما لا يطاق، واستدلوا بتكليف أبي لهب وغيره بالإيمان مع أن القرآن أخبر أنه لا يؤمن، فكان من ذلك أن بعض المصنفات في الأصول انتحلت مذهب نفي الأفعال الاختيارية للإنسان وخلطوا الأصول ببعض أقوال المرجئة كالوقف في ألفاظ العموم في آيات الوعيد والتوقف في دلالات الأمر التي فيها دخول النار للعصاة كما يقرر الباقلاني وغيره.
إلى ذلك، اتبع المؤلف منهجاً في هذا الكتاب جاعلاً مسائله مرتبة وفق تسلسل الموضوعات في مصنفات الأصول، فلم يتكلم عن المسائل التي تتعلق بالقياس قبل المسائل التي تتعلق بالدلالات، مع الإشارة إلى بيان مواضع هذه المسائل في كتب الأصول...
