يعد مختصر ابن عرفة الورغمي موسوعة فقهية متكاملة خصصه المؤلف لأحكام الفقه المالكي فعرض لكل المسائل التي لم يرد ذكرها في مؤلفات أخرى كثيرة. وعلى الرغم من كونه مختصرات وموجزاً في أسلوب إلا أن المؤلف تعمد التوسع في بحث الآراء المهملة والمعمول بها فجاء المختصر في أربعة مجلدات وهو بلا شك مصدر لا غنى عنه للمحققين والدارسين إذ يحيط بأكثر الأقوال المنقولة عن أئمة المذهب المالكي حتى نهاية القرن السابع الهجري. أما منهج التأليف فهو الجمع بين منهج المشارقة في تحليل العناصر وتجريدها ومنهج المغاربة في نقد الآراء وتوجيهها وقد جاء المختصر مرتباً على أبواب الفقه المعهودة مبتدءاً بالطهارة والصلاة.
وابن عرفة الورغمي هو أبو عبد الله محمد بن حماد بن عرفة المولود في تونس سابع عشر من شهر رجب سنة (716هـ/1316م) وقد عرف بغزارة علمه وسعة اطلاعه وورعه وتقواه وله مصنفات كثيرة إلا أن المختصر يكاد يكون أهمها جميعاً. وقد اعتمد المحقق على النسخ المودعة بالمكتبة الوطنية بتونس واختار من تلك النسخ ما وجده سالماً من العبر في أولها، وقد عمد إلى تحرير النص وفقاً القواعد الإملائية العربية الحديثة وقام بمقابلة النسخة الأم بغيرها ذاكراً أوجه الخلاف ذات الأثر الملحوظ، في تغير المعنى كما عمد إلى وضع عناوين للمسألة الجزئية المتميزة التي ليس لها عنوان بالمخطوط. ولم يغفل عملية الرجوع إلى بعض المصادر الأصلية التي استمد منها ابن عرفة نقولاته في مختصره. كما قام بترجمة الإعلام وتخريج مواضع الآيات والأحاديث النبوية من مصادرها. إضافة إلى توضيح بعض المفردات المغربية والاصطلاحات الأصولية والفقهية.
