واحِدٌ من كِلاسيكياتِ الأدبِ الرُّومانيِّ القديم، لأحدِ الفلاسفةِ الرُّواقيِّينَ الأخلاقيِّينَ المتأخِّرِين، الذي رسَّخَ في كِتابِه مَبادِئَ الفَلْسفةِ الرُّواقيَّةِ الأخلاقيَّة؛ إذْ يقدِّمُ نظرتَها في فلسفةِ الحياةِ والموت، ورُؤيتَها للتصالُحِ بينَ النفسِ والطبيعةِ وكيفيةِ تقبُّلِ أحكامِ القَدَر. مثَّلَ «إبكتيتوس» ما يُمكِنُ أنْ يُطلَقَ علَيْه الفيلسوفُ الشَّعْبي، فذاعَتْ شُهْرتُه وانتشرَتْ تَعالِيمُه في شتَّى أرجاءِ الإِمْبراطورِية الرومانية، وتأثَّرَ به الإمبراطورُ «ماركوس أوريليوس». لم يَترُكْ إبكتيتوس أثَرًا مكتوبًا، بل قامَ تِلميذُه «فلافيوس آريانوس» بجمْعِ أفكارِه في كتابِ «المُحادَثات»، ثم قرَّرَ اختصارَه ليَخرجَ إلينا في هَذا «المختصَر».
