عُرف مروان في هذا البلد - ألمانيا برسام المراحل إذ جعل من الأصالة والعودة إلى الجذور المحور والخلفية لمعظم أعماله في كل المراحل، عندما قال عن بداياته في نهاية الخمسينات "إن دمشق مكان ولادتي بقدر ما كانت بعيدة فقد كانت المحور لمعظم أعمالي وكادت تطغى عليها، كما أن ألوان دمشق ونور البوادي والصحراء لم تفارقني". - د. عيسى علاونه
اللوحة عند مروان تزخر بالألوان أو بمهرجان من الأنغام والروائح تُشاهدها وتشمها وتتذوقها في اللون أولاً وفي الشكل ثانياً؛ هنا يحضرني ما قاله مؤرخ الفن الألماني ومدير متحف برلين للفن الحديث "يورن ميركرت" عن رسم مروان: "مروان رسامٌ هادئٌ كثير الصمت، إنه من أصعب رسامي هذا البلد، ويتميز عنهم جميعاً بأن صورته لا تنفتح مغاليقها للمشاهد إلا بمداومة النظر والصبر والتأني".
هذه الصورة التي يدركها المشاهد فقد عندما تحرك فيه الحواس، أي عندما تبدأ الحواس في حركة دائبة إلى أن يصبح بوسع المشاهد أن يشم بالعينين وأن يلمس بالعينين وبهما يسمع أيضاً.
