"الجنسية ثياب يلبسها المرء أو يخلعها ساعة يشاء. غير أن الهوية الحقيقية هي جلدنا الذي نحمله معنا منذ ولادتنا، هذه هي الجذور. جلولاً تستطيع أن تخلعه ساعة تشاء". لم يكن حديث محسن غريباً عني. لقد سمعت مثله في أخي ليث. حديثهما جعلاني اكتشف متأخراً جداً، أن السفر أيضاً بات حلماً عقيماً، حرية ناقصة. إنها بحكم طبيعتها لن تكون على مقاس أرواحنا. ستبقى حرية مزيفة ما لم تنبع من الجذور. شجرة وأنا، أصبحنا وحيدين، تاريخ طويل شرع يجري خلفنا كالدول المتعرج. أنظر إلى البحر من خلال الشرفات. عندما استيقظ صباحاً، أو قبل أن أنام، وربما بينهما أثناء النهار. للآن لا أصدق أن البحر بحثوا أمامي. إذ من كان يجرؤ على التنبوء بأن الفقراء سيسكنون يوماً بالقرب منه، كثيرون مثلي أخذوا يتوقعون بقلق واضح عودة أصحاب الأملاك السابقين. أما أنا فقد تحول انتظاري إلى كابوس، خصوصاً عندما رحت، اتخيل بيتنا السابق، حيث لا يزال ينتظرنا في أكثر الأحياء شعبية وانخفاضاً عن سطح البحر حيث تنتشر روائح الأطعمة ليلاً نهاراً وإلى جانبها روائح المجارير"... "لقد حظيت بما كنت أحلم ولكن يجب لأحلامي أن تنتهي وأن لا تتخطى قدر الإمكان... الذي يجب لمثلي أن يحلم به"...
