إن الناظر في لغة العرب يجد أن في هذه اللغة من الإتساع ما لا يوقفها عند حدود حالة معرفية محددة، فهي تحتضن علوماً شتى ومعارف جمّة، فضلاً عن أن الدلالات تتعدد في المفردة الواحدة، ومن بين هذه الحالات المعرفيَّة علم الأنواء الذي سمي فيما بعد بــ (علم الهيئة)، إذ إن للعرب في هذا الضرب من العلوم يداً طولى، وإذا تتبعنا آثاره في العصر الجاهلي فإننا سنقف على قصيدة شعرية منسوبة للمهلهل بن ربيعة، يحكي فيها مواقع الكواكب والنجوم ومسمياتها بصورة دقيقة وصحيحة، مما يدلل على أن معرفة العرب في الأنواء قد سبقت عصر المهلهل بزمن طويل، وأن ما ذكره المهلهل في قصيدته بات حالة إعتيادية وصورة مستكملة يعرفها من عاصره من الناس، لأن حياتهم ترتبط بالأنواء وأفعالها إرتباطاً وثيقاً ومباشراً، وأن تعلقهم به تعلق والد بولد، فهم يترقبون أوقات هبوب الرياح وظهور السحاب ومخايله، ونزول المطر، جاعلين من سقوط الكواكب وطلوعها وما ينتج جزاء ذلك من متغيراتٍ في المناخ من حر وبردٍ، ورياح وسحاب ومطر، وسني خصب ونماء، وجَدْبٍ وقَحْطٍ، حَالة يَوْميَّة ماثلة مترقّبة، فإذا مُطِرُوا نسبوا فِعْل الأمطار إلى نجوم معلومة، فقالوا: مطرنا بنوء الثُّريَّا، أو الجبهة، أو الدَّلْو، وغير ذلك من منازل القمر، حتى لقد قالوا: (لولاء نوء الجبهة ما كان للعرب إبل).
وهم يلهجون بذكر كواكب معينة كالثّريَّا مثلاً، فإن ذكرهم لها قد فاق كل الكواكب، فهم يراقبون طُلُوعِهَا وسقوطها وحركتها في السَّمَاء وتأثيراتها على الأرض وعلى معاشهم بإعتقادهم، حتى إنهم أطلقوا عليها النَّجم، فلفظ النجم حيثما ورد في مقولاتهم وأشعارهم وأخبارهم مفرداً معرفاً بأل غير مضاف فإنه يعني الثُّريَّا حصراً، فإذا طلعت في البرد قالوا: طلع النجم عشاءً ابتغى الراعي كساءً، وإذا طلعت في الحرّ قالوا: طلع النجمُ غُذيَّة ابتغى الراعي شُكَيَّه.
وفي تأثيرها على الأرض - كما يظنون - قالوا: ما طلعت الثُّريَّا ولا ناءت إلا بعاهة في الناس والإبل، وغَرْبُها أعْيَهُ من شرقها، أي أكثر عاهة، وقد صح عن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم أنه قال: "إذا طلع النجم لم يبق في الأرض من العاهة شيء إلا رفع"، وفسره ابن قتيبة بعاهة الثمار، لأنها تطلع بالحجاز وقد أزهي البُسْرُ وأُمنت عليه العاهة وحلَّ يَنْعُ النَّخْل.
ولم يَخْلِ الْعَرَب بقيّة مَنَازِل القَمَر من سجع يتعلَّق بطلوع المنزلة وسقوطها مدلّلين على الحالة وتأثيراتها بإعتبارها زمناً ووقتاً ينتج عنه نوء يرونه أمامهم ظاهراً رأي العين.
