من المعلوم أن يوغسلافيا التي توحدت بالقوة على يد المارشال "جوزف تيتو" لم تستطع أن ترقى إلى مستوى الوطن بالمعنى الأيديولوجي للكلمة، بل بقيت رغم توحدها كناية عن لوحة فسيفساء تتداخل فيها الانتماءات القومية والآتنية والدينية، وتتشابك على أراضيها المصالح الإقليمية والدولية إلى حدّ يصعب الإمساك بأطراف الخيوط التي تتحكم بمساراتها. وإذا كانت الجمهوريات اليوغسلافية نتيجة إفرازات الأوضاع الجديدة قد نالت استقلالها وباعتراف دولي بهذا الانفصال عن الدولة الأم فإن الحال لم تكن كذلك بالنسبة للبوسنة والهرسك إذ تناقضت بشأن مستقبلها المواقف المحلية والخارجية، وتعددت الآراء، كما نشبت حروب بينها وبين الكروات حيناً، وبينها وبين الصرب أحياناً كثيرة كان نتائجها سقوط آلاف القتلى والجرحى، والتدمير الكافل لهياكلها وبناها. وانتهت الحرب بتوقيع اتفاق /دايتون/ نهاية العام 1995 دون أن تحصل على صفة الدولة المستقلة ولفهم أحداث يوغسلافيا الحالية لا بد من معرفة تاريخها، وحضارتها، وماضيها. وفي هذا الكتاب الذي نقلب صفحاته، دراسة تحليلية تاريخية تدور حول ماضي يوغسلافيا وهدفها إلقاء الأضواء على أبعاد أزمة شغلت العالم بشكل عام وأوروبا بشكل خاص.
