كان الأمير فخر الدين الثاني الكبير أعظم حكام عصره حنكة، وأعرق الأمراء نسباً، وأكثر الزعماء انفتاحاً، وأوسعهم شهرة، وأنفعهم عملاً، وأحذقهم عقلاً، وأجرأهم تصرفاً، وأشدهم بأساً، عرف فخر الدين ان شعار سياسة العثمانيين هو "فرق تسد" وان تجزئة لبنان مفتعلة فتبلور في ضميره هدف واحد طموح هو إعادة لبنان إلى سالف مجده.
ومن أجل تحقيق لبنان الكبير كان على فخر الدين أن ينتصر على عدو مزدوج، العثمانيين وعملائهم الإقطاعيين، فكانت حياته حرباً لا تطل للزود عن لبنان وإعادة توازنه بإعادة وحدة أرضه. لم يكن من الممكن التغلب على العثمانيين، ومعظم دول أوروبا تساندهم، فكان على فخر الدين أن يجد له حلفاء مناهضين للأتراك، لذا مدّ يده إلى اوربا الحضارة التي تحمل اسم أميرة من صور، واستجاب لنداءه غراندوق توسكانا، وتعاهدا على ضرب العثمنة بسبب تعاسة الشرق.
وقد تسنى للأمير العظيم أن يدمر وطنه ويبسط سلطانه، وأن يتغلب على والي حلب والشام. جعل فخر الدين من لبنان دولة حسدتها المنطقة لغناها، شجع الزراعة والصناعة والتجارة وطوّر أساليبها في جوّ من الأمن لا مثيل له. ومما لا شك فيه أن لبنان الحديث والمعاصر لم ينعم يوماً بالقوة والرفاهية اللتين نعم بهما في عهد الأمير الكبير. لقد أحب اللبنانيين كل اللبنانيين دون تمييز طائفي ودعاهم جميعاً إلى مساعدته على بناء لبنان جديد متحضر مزدهر، وحدة أسس وبنى وحقق لبنان الكبير معيداً إليه أمجاده الغابرة، لذا سيقى لبنان يذكره بمحبة وإعجاب. وسيعودون ينهلون من معينه الذي لا ينضب إبان المحن والأزمات المصيرية.
والمؤلف في هذا الكتاب يعيد سرد سيرة هذا البطل بصدق ودون مواربة أو تميز وقد سجل الظواهر، واستقصى الأخبار، وصور الحقائق، وكشف عن الصواب، فوجد في حياته نوراً، وفي سيرته هداية، وفي تاريخه ملحقه فعاهد نفسه أن يضعها بين أيدي الشباب ليكون له في مسيرة هذا المخلص العظيم مثلاً ونبراساً.
