"... حين شرعت في الكتابة عن القائد الشيوعي فرج الله الحلو، أولاً، ثم عن القائدين الشيوعيين نقولا شاوي وجورج حاوي، وجدت نفسي مشدوداً للكتابة عن قائد آخر للحزب هو فؤاد الشمالي، المؤسس الأول للحزب، الذي مات مظلوماً من رفاقه، مقهوراً، ومنسياً، لولا أن أعاد التذكير به محمد دكروب في سفره المهم عن تأسيس الحزب، "جذور السنديانة الحمراء". وهكذا دخلت، بالصدفة، في عملية استذكار لتاريخ هؤلاء القادة الكبار من شيوعيّي بلدي لبنان. وهو تاريخ يشكل، في جزء مهم منه، بالنسبة إليّ، تاريخ حياتي كشيوعي منذ ستين عاماً...
من هنا، بالتحديد، ولدت فكرة تحويل هذه الكتابة عن القادة الأربعة الكبار في تاريخ الحزب الشيوعي اللبناني إلى كتاب يقدم للقارئ فكرة عامة وضرورية عن الحقبة التي ولدت فيها وتطوّرت الحركة الشيوعية في لبنان".
