إليكم هذا الدفاع عن البوذية صممه الراهب المتبحر راهولا. الذي نشأ في سيلان وتلقى البوذية الأصلية فيها، ثم أتبعها بدراسات له في الهند عن البوذية الكبرى التي انتشرت في الصين واليابان، ثم بدراسات أخرى في قسم الدراسات البوذية في باريس، وهذا ما يجعل من كتابه هذا مرجعاً أصيلاً لفهم بوذا والبوذية.
يقول راهولا في "مدخل" كتابه: نشاهد اليوم في العالم كله اهتماماً متزايداً بالبوذية، ويمكننا أن نأسف لأن معظم المؤلفات التي ظهرت في الغرب عالجت الموضوع بأفكار مسبقة مأخوذة من ديانات أخرى، وقد حاولت في هذا الكتاب الصغير أن أعطي عرضاً ملخصاً ودقيقاً ومباشراً حرصت أن أستمده من كلام بوذا نفسه، كما نقل إلينا في النصوص القديمة الأصلية، ولم ألجأ إلى الكتابات المتأخرة إلا في بعض الأماكن.
في هذا العمل واجهت صعوبات مختلفة، إذ حاولت أن أتجنب الإفراط في التقنية والإفراط في الابتذال والتعميم في الوقت نفسه، وأن أقدم للقارئ عرضاً مفهوماً يمكنه أن يفيد منه دون أن أضحي مع ذلك بشيء من جوهر خطابات بوذا أو من شكلها. ومع محافظتي على إتباع النصوص الأصلية على أكثر ما يمكن من القرب، فقد جهدت أن أجعل ترجماتي لها ميسرة ومقروءة.
