هذا معجم لمصنفي الكتب العربية، من عرب وعجم، ممن سبقوا إلى رحمة الله، منذ بدء تدوين الكتب العربية حتى العصر الحاضر، وقد الحقت بهم من كان شاعراً، أو راوياً، وجمعت آثاره بعد وفاته، كما اقتصرت على ترجمة من عرفت ولادته، ووفاته، أو الزمن الذي كان حياً فيه.
بدأت بذكر أسم المترجم، وشهرته، وبجانبه ولادته، ووفاته، أو الزمن الذي كان حياً فيه، بالتاريخ الهجري والميلادي، ثم نسبته، وكنيته، ولقبه، ثم اختصاصه في العلم، إن كان له اختصاص، أو مشاركة في كثير من العلوم، أو بعضها، بدون تعظيم وتفخيم، وقد يكون المترجم أكثر اختصاصاً، أو مشاركة مما ذكر –كأكثرالقدامى- بسبب ضياع كثير من آثاره، أو إهمال المصادر ذكر ذلك.
ثم مكان ولادته، وزمنها، ونشأته، ورحلته، ومن أخذ عنهم، إن كانوا من المشهورين، ثم المناصب التي تولاها، كالقضاء، الفيتا، والتدريس، والوزارة والكتابة الخ... ثم مكان وفاته، وزمنها.
ثم مؤلفاته، واكتفى بذكر خمسة كتب للذين أكثرزا التصنيف، ولتبيان نوع علمه عمدت إلى انتخاب هذه الكتب، من علوم منوعة، دلالة على مشاركته في العلم، بدون أن ينظر إلى قيمتها العلمية، وأما كثرتها وقلتها، وببيان مخطوطها ومطبوعها، وأماكن وجودها، فيستطيع الطالب أن يعرف ذلك من مصادر الترجمة.
