دراسة تاريخية شاملة حول الخوارج، ونشأتهم عبر مجريات أحداث حياتهم، والمعارك التي خاضوها، وذِكْر أهم صفاتهم كالغلو بالدين، وشق عصا الطاعة، والطعن، والتضليل، وسوء الظن، والشدة على المسلمين، وغير ذلك.
ولم يقتصر الكتاب على النشأة التاريخية القديمة، بل انسحبت الدراسة على ذكر سمات الخوارج ونزعاتهم في العصر الحديث، كالجهل بالعلوم الشرعية، وشيوع الظلم، والتحاكم للقوانين الوضعية، والتأويلات الخاطئة، وانتشار الفساد بين الناس وما يتصل بذلك.
وعرّج المؤلف على علاقة الخوارج بالإمام علي بن أبي طالب، وقدَّم دراسة مستفيضة للأيام الأخيرة في حياة الخليفة الراشد الرابع حتى استشهاده.
ثم ذكر الرثاء الأدبي الذي قيل حول أمير المؤمنين علي كرّم الله وجهه.
وبذا يغدو الكتاب جامعاً بين القديم والحديث، وبين التاريخ والتراجم والأدب، فهو بحقّ موسوعة عن الخوارج وطريقة تفكيرهم، وسمات حياتهم
