هذا الكتاب يجمع في تحليلاته بين موضوعات ثلاث هي: المجتمع، والثقافة، والشخصية. استناداً إلى تصور واحد يعتبر-المجتمع بمثابة نسق أكبر ينطوي على انساق فرعية أهمها:
نسق الثقافة، ونسق الشخصية، هذا فضلاً من أن أنساق الثقافة وأنساق الشخصية؟ كأنساق فرعية تنطوي في ذاتها على أجزاء وعناصر متباينة، وأن فهم هذه العناصر لن تتحقق على النحو المناسب إلا في إطار الأنساق الفرعية الأخرى، وبخاصة في إطار النسق الأكبر.
ذلك لأن الشخصية لا يمكن اعتبارها بناءً واقعياً يضم مجموعة عناصر عقلية فقط، وإنما تعد الشخصية بمثابة وحدة نفسية اجتماعية ثقافية... كما أن نسق الثقافة لا يمكن فهمه بعيداً عن النسق الاجتماعي الأكبر وهو المجتمع. طالما استحال وجود الثقافة بعيداً عن المجتمع والإنسان باعتباره الكائن الحي الوحيد الذي يمتاز عن غيره من كائنات حية بالثقافة.
