تخصص هذا الكتاب في دراسة العلاقة بين الثقافة والشخصية ويتبين لقارئ هذه الفصول أن موضوع الثقافة والشخصية كان ولا يزال محور الدراسة للعديد من الأبحاث والنظريات، وتبلورت تلك الدراسات في صورة علم اجتماعي متخصص، وأطلق عليه بعض العلماء اصطلاح الأنثروبولوجيا النفسية، وحددوا هويته كأحد فروع الأنثروبولوجيا الثقافية.
واهتم المؤلف بتتبع مراحل نشأة ونمو هذا العلم الجيد وبتحديد الميدانية هي الينبوع الذي يزود هذا الكتاب المادة الثقافية والنفسية وكان لتوفر هذه المادة الغزيرة أكبر الأثر في أن يحظى موضوع الثقافة والشخصية باهتمام المتخصصين في علم النفس والأنثروبولوجيا وعلم الاجتماع وغيرها، ولم يقتصر هذه الأبحاث الميدانية على المجتمعات البدائية، وإنما شملت كذلك المجتمعات الناحية والمجتمعات المتقدمة.
وإلى جانب الأبحاث الميدانية، اهتم المؤلف بعرض النظريات التي تفسر العلاقة بين الثقافة والشخصية، وكان لا بد أن يسبق عرض هذه النظريات التعرف بشيء من التفصيل على المفهومين الرئيسيين، وهما الثقافة والشخصية، ويرجع ذلك إلى اختلاف الإطار النظري لكل مفهوم، وأخيراً اهتم المؤلف بالتحدث عن الشخصية المصرية التقليدية ومحدداتها الثقافية.
