اتفق المؤرخون جميعاً على أن اسمه "لقيط بن يعمر الأيادي" كما أجمعوا على نسبته إلى قبيلة إياد. ولكنهم اختلفوا فيما عدا ذلك، فالمعلومات التي سجلت عن حياته ضحلة جداً، وتشتد بها الأسطورة والخلط والصحيح منها لا يكاد يخرج عن ذكر اسمه. عاش لقيط في مرحلة عصبية من حياة العرب في الجاهلية، فارتبط ذكره برفع مكانة العرب عالياً. فتحلى بروح العربية القومية وفدى نفسه في سبيل تحرير قومه من عدو مهاجم غادر، فكان أول فدائي بذل روحه رخيصة في سبيل حرية العرب وكرامتهم. نظم لقيط قصيدته الأولى والوحيدة منذ أكثر من الف وست مائة سنة، وهو معتقل في السجن، فجاءت عاطفته في أوج ثورتها وعنف هيجانها، وتعدّ هذه الرسالة الشعرية أول نص أدبي في فن الترسل. وهذا الكتاب يضمّ سيرة حياة لقيط بن يعمر الأيادي كما ويضم ديوانه شعره بالإضافة إلى ثلاث نسخ خطية من ديوانه مصورة عن أصولها المحفوظة.
