في هذا الكتاب رسالة ظريفة، في موضوع طريف، تندرج تحت الملح والنوادر، ولقد وقف المؤلف على عنوانها منذ أكثر من عشرين عاماً وكان قد نشرها "لويس شيخو" في مجلة (المشرق) عام (1909م) العدد (12).
وقد استعان المؤلف بثلاث طبعات من تحقيق "حمدي زمزم"، وتحقيق "الشيخ زهير الشاويش"، والدكتور "محمد ويسي" وقدم بذلك نصاً كاملاً بالإضافة إلى العناوين لكل فقرة، تقريباً لمعاني الكتاب وقد وضع العناوين بين معقوفتين.
وقد ذكر المؤلف أنه من الأسباب الداعية لنشر هذه الرسالة في هذا الزمان في نهاية الربع الأول من القرن الخامس عشر الهجري، هي نفس الأسباب التي دعت ابن المرزبان لتأليف هذه الرسالة عندما أجاب من طلب منه ذلك قائلاً: "ذكرت أعزك الله - زماننا هذا، وفساد مودة أهله وخسة أخلاقهم، ولؤم طباعهم، وإن أبعد الناس سفراً، من كان في طلب أخ صالح... إلى أن قال: وسألتني - أعزك الله - أن أجمع لك ما جاء في فضل الكلب على شرار الإخوان، ومحمود خصاله في السر والإعلان فقد جمعت ما فيه الكفاية وبيان اهـ".
