لم يكن سهلاً على الباحث أن يتناول موضوعاً محوره الرئيسي هو الكلب، فمثل هذا الموضوع يدعو لتعجب واستغراب الكثير من المثقفين فكيف الحال بالنسبة لعامة الناس، ومثل هذا الموضوع قد لا يتطرق إليه البعث، لأنه يبدو في نظرهم مدعاة للغوص في أمور وقضايا هم بغنى عنها. وإذا كان ابن المرزبان قد حاول "تفضيل الكلاب على كثير ممن لبس الثياب" فإن القصد ليس الحط من صورة الإنسان بتفضيل الكلب عليه، ولكنه إرشاد وتوجيه للإنسان بمثال الحيوان، فمن وفاء الكلب وألفه وحبه لأهله أمثولة للزمن الرديء، حيث الغدر والخيانة وندرة وجود الصاحب الصالح، وكره الإنسان لأخيه الإنسان... وهذا الكتاب يضم في متنه كتاب "تفضيل الكلاب على كثير ممن لبس الثياب" مذيلاً بتحقيق "عصام شبارو" الذي استمد دراسته هذه من مصادر عربية وإسلامية مختلفة منها كتب الجاحظ والدميري والقزويني والقاضي وغيرهم ممن ذكر الكلب، وما قيل فيه من أمثال وقصص وأشعار. هذا إضافة إلى آراء بعض الفقهاء والعلماء، وفوق هذا وذاك ما ورد في الحديث النبوي الشريف وما أشار إليه الله تعالى في محكم كتابه الكريم. وقد استهل المحقق كتابه بخلفية تاريخية وضعها ضمن "مدخل عام" يشتمل على موجز عن أصل الكلب ومواقف بعض الشعوب الشرقية القديمة تجاهه ومنها العرب في الجاهلية، وعلى ذكره في القرآن الكريم وفي الحديث النبوي الشريف وآراء الأئمة والفقهاء وكذلك العلوم الطبية وأمراض الكلب وذلك وصولاً إلى "التمهيد" الذي خصصه للحديث مباشرة عن كتاب تفضيل الكلاب على كثير ممن لبس الثياب من حيث مؤلفه ومحتواه وتسميته والدوافع التي أدت إلى وضعه وأهميته.
