اهتمّ العرب بالهدايا منذ أقدم العصور، وجعلوا الهدية والعطية سبيلاً لدفع الحقد أو كسب الودّ كما فعلت الأمم التي تحيط بهم. ولم يقصروا أمرهم على المال بل تخطوه إلى الجواهر والدر والمسك والعنبر... وغيرها.
ومؤلف هذا الكتاب أبي بكر محمد بن خلف بن المرزبان (توفي سنة 921ه) هو واحد من علماء عصره ممن شاركوا بوضع كتاب اسمه (الهدايا) ولأهمية هذا الأثر دأب على تحقيقه الأستاذ جليل العطية، بعد أن ترجم للمؤلف وما قاله علماء عصره فيه، وبالإعتماد على مخطوطتين نفيستين للكتاب هما: 1- مخطوطة دار الكتب المصرية، تعود إلى القرن السادس الهجري وعنوانها "منتخب من الهدايا"... و 2- مخطوطة ليدن وتحمل عنوان طويل "جزء فيه أخبار حسان منتقاة من جزء منتخب من كتاب (الهدايا) لأبي بكر محمد بن خلف بن المرزبان.. انتقاء كاتبه أحمد بن اللبودي".
وفي الكتاب نقع على أحاديث فيها أخبار بالتواتر تحكي عمّا كان القوم يهدون بعضهم البعض من هدايا مع الإشارة إلى مصدر كل حديث ورواية. هذا وقد أضاف المؤلّف قصائد في الشعر العربي هي من نوع (الهزج) والمنادمة قالها الشعراء في مناسبات مختلفة.
عناوين الكتاب 1- مقدّمة التحقيق، 2- المنتخب من كتاب الهدايا، 3- مستدرك المنتخب من كتاب الهدايا. وملحق بفهارس المصادر والمراجع والأعلام والأماكن والبقاع والهدايا.
