وقعت أحداث الحادي عشر من أيلول ولفت العالم بدوامتها، أربكت الجميع واستطاع الإعلام الأمريكي أن يلف العالم بكذبة أرادتها السياسة الأمريكية، كانت أحداثاً شنيعة، أياً كان منفذها، لأنها قتلت أبرياء وأفلتت الوحش على الجميع.
ما حدث كان له تأثيره على إيزابيل الليندي، مما جعلها تفكر بالعالم الذي تعيش فيه، وبوطنها، تراه كاليفورنيا التي تحب لأنها أصبحت بلدها الواقعي، أم تشيلي "وطنها الأم" التي خرجت منه تحت ضغط الديكتاتورية العسكرية المريعة؟ لذا فهي تقول: "بمصادفة يقشعر لها البدن -كارما تاريخية- اصطدمت الطائرتان المخطوفتان بهدفيهما يوم الاثنين الحادي عشر من أيلول، تماماً في الأسبوع ذاته والشهر ذاته -وساعة الصباح ذاتها تقريباً- التي حدث فيها انقلاب تشيلي العسكرية عام 1973. كان ذاك الانقلاب عملاً إرهابياً دبرته المخابرات المركزية الأمريكية ضد الديمقراطية. صورة الأبنية وهي تشتعل، الدخان، اللهب والذعر متشابهة في كلا المشهدين، في ذلك الثلاثاء البعيد من العام 1973 انفطرت حياتي، ما من شيء عاد ليكون ما كان من قبل، فأنا خسرت بلداً، الثلاثاء المشؤوم من العام 2001 كان أيضاً لحظة حاسمة، ما من شيء سيعود ليكون كما كان، وربحت بلداً".
بعد سقوط الديكتاتورية العسكرية صار بإمكانها أن تعود إلى وطنها الأم لكنها لا تفعل، تعود في زيارات قصيرة فقط، زيارات إلى بلد مخترع نراه على امتداد صفحات هذا الكتاب الذي يتجاوز كونه مذكرات ليصبح نوعاً من التأمل في الجغرافيا والناس، في سلوك الإنسان، وليصبح رحلة عبر الذاكرة وتاريخ الأسرة يقودها الحنين.
