عندما تحتقرك الحياة، لا تبقي أمامك سبيل سوى أن تسكر وتنسج بعض القصص الخيالية بأسلوب فقط غير مألوف. استمت أحداث هذه الرواية من حانة قذرة في برازافيل، عاصمة جمهورية الكونغو التي كانت سابقاً مستعمرة فرنسية. والقدح المشعور هو الشخص المكلف من قبل مالك البار لتسجيل حساب الأشخاص الذين يرتادونه. فشرع يكتب في دفتر ملاحظاته أثناء ذلك عن أمجاد الزبائن المنتكسة. وفي ذلك أثبت أنه راوٍ ماكر لعوب استحواذي. بعض قصصه نسخها عن الرعاة؛ وفي بعضها الآخر سخر من السياسيين والوجهاء، وفي بعضها القليل تحدث عن مغامراته الفاشلة. وما يجمع بين كل هذه القصص أن صاحبها ساقها باتجاه الخيال. وأن معظمها ينتهي بالدموع. وما يميز رواية القدح المشعور من ناحية سرد الحدث أن مابانكو يقف على هامش الأحداث ليتركها تتابع وفق العرف، ووفق الاتجاه الذي تعرضه طبيعة الشخصيات. أما ما يميزها من الناحية الفنية. فهو السردية الإيقاعية. وتناغم الجمل في سرعتها. وهذا ما أثار المشاعر في الأوساط الباريسية عند صدور هذه الرواية.
