لماذا الحوار؟... هل الحوار ضروري بين القومية والدين؟... كان الدافع الأساسي وراء إصدار هذه المجموعة من الأبحاث، وإعطائها صفة الحوار، وهو حوار بالضرورة، سببين:
-الأول: وهو وجهة نظر تريد القفز فوق الثقافة الإسلامية السائدة، وتتذرّع بأنه لا ضرورة في تقريب العلاقة بين العروبة والإسلام لكثرة المسلمات والنصوص الثابتة التي يتحصَّ وراءها الإسلاميون، والتي لا يمكن زحزحتهم عن الإيمان بثباتها المطلق، فالحوار معهم، في مثل هذه الحالة، عقيم.
أما الثاني؛ فهي وجهة نظر مفكر إسلاميّ، يُعدُّ من أكثر الإسلاميين قناعة بالحوار والتطوير، ولكنه يحسب، في الوقت ذاته، أن المشروع القومي العربي الفكري - السياسي متميز "إلى حد العداء والمغايرة عن التيارات الرجعية والجمود... ومتميز أيضاً... إلى حد المغايرة والعداء عن التيار الإسلامي، الذي يتخذ من الإسلام منطلقاً للإحياء... والنهضة"!!!.
لقد اقفل الإثنان أبواب الحوار!! فهل هما يمثلان وجهين مختلفين لأصولية تدعي الإنفتاح والتغيير، فلا يمكننا، بمثل هذه الحالة أن ندَّق أبوابهما؟.
