يتناول المؤلف بالدراسة موضوع الردة في الإسلام، انطلاقاً من فرضية نظرية تقول بأن الردة في الإسلام، كما هي في المسيحية أو اليهودية، ومن قبلهما الوثنية، مظهر ثقافي له من صفات القداسة ما لا يدع أحداُ من المتدينين أن يتجرأ على المساس به، وهو يعبر أصدق تعبير عن حالة التجميد القصري التي يتعرض لها الفكر البشري-وأداة ضاغطة على العقل لغرض الجمود عليه ضد أن يعمل في سبيل تطوير المعتقد والفكر.
في هذه الدراسة، عمل المؤلف على قراءة الردة؛ أصولها واتجاهاتها من خلال نصوص ووقائع التاريخيين السياسي والعقائدي لشتى الفرق الإسلامية، ومنها الحية حتى الآن بشكل خاص تارة، وبقراءة النصوص التي لها علاقة بهذين الجانبين قراءة نقدية تارة أخرى.
لهذا السبب فقد سلك في دراسته هذه خطوات البحث الاجتماعي وهو المنهج الذي يستند إلى وصف الحالة في مراحلها التاريخية، وفي جذورها الفكرية. فكان لا بد له من قراءة الأصول التاريخية لمبدأ الردة في تسلسل زمني، كما حدث بالفعل، وفي وصف اتجاهاتها الفكرية العقائدية. هذا المنهج جعل المؤلف يكثر من الوصف المستند إلى كتب التراث التاريخية، وربما له علاقة وثيقة بمسائل الدراسة الرئيسية.
وقد كان من أهداف المؤلف العمل على مقاربة الأصول والاتجاهات التاريخية-في السياسة والعقائد-مع النتائج التي ترتبت على مسيرة المجتمعات العربية والإسلامية في الماضي السحيق والقريب على حدّ سواء، والذي ما زالت تأثيراته مخيمة بشكل جدي ومعيق لمسيرة التغيير في البنى الثقافية والسياسية للمجتمعات العربية.
