من التراث الشعبي لمجتمع البادية في عمان قصة شخصية (ولد العقيلي) أو (ولد العجيلي) بتضخيم الجيم حسب النطق المحلي للاسم. قصة تتحدث عن شخصية غير عادية عاشت في مكان ما من الصحراء العمانية الفسيحة، زمانها بغير مذياع أو تلفزة، وقبل أن يخط الحبر مجلة أو جريدة، وسائلها الإبل وصبر إنسان ذلك العصر وجلده على رعايتها وترويضها، فهي سفينته لبلوغ أماكن ما كان ليبلغها إلا بشق الأنفس، فمن حليبها ولحمومها غذاء وشحومها دواء وأوبارها كساء من صر الشتاء وجلودها دلاء وحذاء، هكذا يعبر عنها أبناء البادية.
البادية مكان خصب لرواية القصص، والأساطير والأحاجي القديمة لما توفره صعوبة الاتصالات، وتعذرها أحياناً من فراغ، يتم ملؤه بسرد الحكايات الجادة والهزلية دون أن تخلو من إضافات في كل مرة تتم روايتها. ومن بين ما يروي في البادية العمانية من قصص وحكايات لها الصيت الذائع والقول الشائع، قصة مشهورة بينهم عرفت بقصة (ولد العجيلي) التي تعتبر لها مكانة متميزة بين سائر القصص والأساطير التي تروي في البادية.
تبدو قصة ولد العجيلي خيالية في ظاهرها أكثر مما هي حقيقة وإن كل أسلوب روايتها لا يكاد يختلف في أغلب التفاصيل بين راو وآخر، وثبات أسماء وأدوار الأشخاص على مر الأيام والزمان. فالقصة تروي من قديم الأيام وغير معروف مكان وزمان حدوثها على وجه التحديد، ولكنها قصة يرويها لك أغلب أبناء البادية، لما تمثله لهم من قوة عزيمة وجلد على مواجهة المصاعب، وحب المغامرة بالحياة في سبيل الوصول إلى من سكن القلب والوجدان حبه وفعل فيه فعل السحر من انجذاب وتعلق به، إلى جانب تعلقهم بالبيئة الجغرافية للصحراء الموقع المفترض لحدوث قصة (ولد العجيلي).
