ربما كانت السنوات العشر (من 1948-1958م) من أخطر سنوات تاريخ سورية الحديث وأهمها، بدأت مع إعلان تقسيم فلسطين، وانتهت بالوحدة المرتجلة بين قطرين مهمين من الأقطار العربية وتصارعت على النفوذ في سورية، خلالها، القوى العظمى بريطانيا، فرنسا، والولايات المتحدة، مستخدمة بعض ضباط الجيش السوري الفتي، الذي لم تتشكل لديه المناعة الكافية لشهوة السلطة، وبعض السياسيين من مختلف الاتجاهات والأحزاب، حتى أصبح ينظر إلى سورية كما يقول المؤلف: "البلد المريض، غير المستقر، كثير الانقلابات، قليل الأهمية والاتزان".
وربما كان هذا ما يهدف إليه أعداء سورية في الداخل والخارج، لآن الشعب السوري الحر لا يمكن أن يستعمر أو يستبعد، أو يتنازل عن حقوقه وحقوق العرب في فلسطين وغيرها.
في هذه الفترة الحرجة كان عمل مؤلف الكتاب في الأمانة العامة لرئاسة الجمهورية، وكان يطلع على الأحداث عن قريب، ويسجلها بكل صدق وأمانة، بعيداً عن المصلحة الشخصية التي اعتادها الناس في مذكرات السياسيين، لبعده عن الهوى والأنانية والمصلحة الشخصية.
وهو إضافة إلى ما امتاز به من خلق رفيع وإطلاع وفير، صاحب أسلوب شائق يمكن وصفه بالسهل الممتنع، ويمتاز كتابه بكثرة الوثائق المهمة لكل باحث أو راغب في الإطلاع على تاريخ سورية، وبصور فوتوغرافية ندر وجودها في كتاب.
