في تاريخ العرب الحديث رجل واحد ضحى بمنصبه، رئيس الدولة، في سبيل ما يؤمن به، لأن كان منسجماً مع نفسه، ولأن الإخلاص لأمته ولفكرة الوحدة العربية سجية من سجاياه. فهو الذي تحقق استقلال سورية سنة 1945م على يديه، بعد جهاد طويل تعرض خلاله لكل ما يتعرض له المناضلون الشرفاء، وكاد أن يدفع حياته ثمناً لحرية بلده، الذي بادله الحب والتقدير.
ووفاء لهذا الرجل العظيم، ولأن الشعب العظيم لا ينسى عظماءه، فقد وضع المؤلف هذا الكتاب. وهو يتناول فيه حياة شكري القوتلي، وجهاده في سبيل تحقيق الاستقلال، وتضحياته لتحقيق الوحدة بين سورية ومصر سنة 1958م.
وبما أن المؤلف كان مديراً عاماً للقصر الجمهوري في سورية، وكان، لما يتمتع به من صفات حميدة عز مثيلها، محط ثقة الرئيس، فقد اصطحبه معه إلى جميع جلسات مباحثات الوحدة، وكلفه بتسجيل محاضرها، وهو قد ضمن هذا الكتاب محاضر تلك الجلسات، بالإضافة إلى وثائق كثيرة تنشر لأول مرة في كتاب.
