والبحث في مثل هذه الدراسة يتطلب إعداد مدخل نظري يتناول التعريف بجغرافية المعتقدات والديانات من حيث التعريف والأقسام والتطور والمنهج والتفاعل، ثم الإنتقال إلى الكشف عن خصائص ظاهرات المعتقدات والديانات وإنتشارها، إذا أن الطبيعة بخصائصها ومخاطرها أثرت في ذهنية الإنسان وبات يخشاها ويتزلف لها، والدين أصبح لدى الأنظمة العرقية الوسط بينه وبينها، وكان التفاعل مكتمل بين الدين والبيئة إذ أن أفكار الدين بدورها أثرت على تطور البيئة وتغيرها.
هذا الكتاب كشف عن الصورة المكانية للمعتقدات والديانات ومستوى التفاعل بينها وفيما بينها والبيئة في صور من أنماط توزيعية مكانية، فلم يتعرض المؤلف إلى مناقشة افكار الديانات وتفضيل بعضها على الآخر، ولم يناقش فلسفتها والقول بصحة بعضها وخطأ الآخر، إنما انصب الإهتمام على عرض الديانات كما هي في نشأتها وإبراز معتقداتها وتوزع أنطقتها على أساس عدد المعتنقين.
