هذا الكتاب خاص بتراجم أعيان القرن الرابع عشر الهجري الشرقية: كحلية البشر في القرن الثالث عشر لعبد الرازق البيطار، وسلك الدرر للقرن الثاني عشر للمدادي إلى غير ذلك: من الكتب التي لا تحصى، وميزته أنه يجمع تراجم هؤلاء الأعلام على اختلاف ديارهم وأوطانهم، وتباين عقائدهم وأديانهم ، وتغاير مشاربهم واتجاهاتهم وتناقض طبائعهم وعاداتهم وتفاوت مداركهم ومؤهلاتهم.
وقد تابع الأستاذ المؤلف، في هذا الكتاب مصادره، في النصوص، من غير تصرف منه في التراجم، وذكر عقب كل ترجمة مصادر تلك الترجمة: من كتب ورسائل ومجاميع، وجرائد ومجلات، على أنه قسمه إلى طبقات مختلفة، ووزعه على جماعات متنوعة، أدرج تحت كل طبقة وجماعة الأفراد الذين يشتركون في عنوانها ويتحقق فيهم وصفها، متعاً للخلط، وتسهيلاً للبحث.
هذا ولم يكن قصده بهذا الكتاب أن يحلل كل شخصية ترجم لها وتعرض لذكرها، وإنما قصده تأليف كتاب جامع لجمهرة أعيان هذا القرن الذي توفوا فيه، واختارهم الله فيما قبل العام السادس والستين منه، وهذا وقد التزم أن ينص على أزمنة ميلادهم ووفاتهم مقتصراً على ذكر السنة في الأكثر، على الأماكن التي ولدوا أو نشأوا فيها، وتربوا وتعلموا في بيئتها ومعاهدها، ورحلوا إليها وتوفوا ودفنوا بها، وعلى المناصب التي تقلدوها وتقلبوا فيها، وعلى أهم الأحداث التي جرت لهم أو تحققت بسببهم، وعلى أبرز الصفات والعادات والأخلاق والآداب التي توفرت فيهم أو عرفت عنهم، وعلى أهم آثارهم ومؤلفاتهم، مقتصراً على إثبات المطبوع منها في الأغلب. كما التزم أن ينص على نسبهم وتحقيقه إن استعفته المصادر وقد ذيل كل ترجمة بذكر المصادر التي أخذت منها وكتبت على ضوئها ليرجع إليها من أراد التأكد والتثبيت أو الزيادة والتوسعة.
