الرواية تحكي قصة شاب أثناء حرب البوسنة هرب وحيداً إلى دولة سلوفينيا وهناك التقى بمزارع عجوز يعيش لوحده فاستضافه عنده وبدأ يعمل معه في المزرعة حتى مرت الأيام والأحداث فالتقى بابن عمه قادماً من ايطاليا وعندها علم عن وجود عائلته في نفس البلد التي لم يكن يعلم عنها شيء ثم يبدأ بالبحث عنهم متنقلاً بين الأماكن حتى يجدهم وينتقلون لعاصمة البلاد للعيش فيها وبحثاً عن عمل لهم كونهم مهاجرين وتستمر الأحداث حتى تتوقف الرواية عند النهاية المفتوحة
