ناقش هذا البحث "ظاهرة الأنا في شعر المتنبي وأبي العلاء" في نطاق الموازنة النقدية، وكي تستوي هذه الرسالة على سوقها كان لا بُدَّ لها أن تستعين بإتجاهات ثلاثة، كان الإتجاه الأول منها إتجاهاً نفسياً يُرضي جانب النَّظرية والتطبيق، وقد بَدَت معالمه في الفصل الأول من الدِّراسة بمبحَثَيْه.
ويحكُمُنا التاريخ في الإتجاه الثاني، فنستطلع من خلاله واقع العالم الإسلامي في الفترة الزمنية التي ضَمَّت واحتوت الشاعرَيْن على هيئة مؤثرات خارجية ساهمت في تكوين شخصيتي الشاعِرَيْن، وكان إستظهار سياسة البلاد بنواحيها الإقتصادية والإجتماعية إثْرَ ضغط تَبدُّل الحضارات والتنازع على السلطة سبيلاً إلى إكتشاف ذلك الواقع والإلمام به من جميع نواحيه، ويَفْرِضُ علينا هذا الفصل أهمِّيته حين يكشف لنا عن الجانب الأكبر عن شخصية أبي الطيب المتنبي وأبي العلاء المعري بعظمتها وتشاؤمها، الأمر الذي جعله محطَّة من محطَّات الإلتقاء والتوافق بين "أنا" كُلٍّ منهما.
ويسلك الإتجاه الثالث والأخير طريق المُمارسة النفسية لظاهرة "الأنا" في شعريهما، حتى يغدو الفصلان الثالث والرابع حِضناً رَحِباً يحوي جزئيات الرِّسالة بكاملها وينطلِق بمُؤَدَّاها من الموازنة والنقد، ولَمَّا كانت الدراسات النفسية قضايا نسبية كان من الصعب أن نُجربها مجرى القياس بجميع جزئياتها.
من هنا، كان الإختلاف منشأً قوياً ينفذ من خلاله إلى قلب تلك الدِّراسات النفسية التي وَقَفَت هذه الرِّسالة شاهداً عليها، وكان التبايُن في نوع القصور بين الشاعِرَيْن يرفِدُ أصول ذاك الإختلاف الذي تخَلِّلَ شعرَيهما في فنَّي المديح والهجاء، وقد سمحت المفارقة التي وقعت في التوجُّه النَّفسي والشعري لِكُلٍّ منهما في نشوئه.
ولا يَحْمِلُنا ذاك الإختلاف على إنتهاك حُرمة القواعد النَّفسية العامَّة، إذ إنَّ لِكُلٍّ مسألةٍ قواعدها التي تحتكم إليها في شكلها العام، الأمر الذي يجعل الفرصة مُتاحة للتناغم والإنسجام بين الكثيرين في النواحي النفسية، وهو الأمر ذاته الذي فتح لنا الطريق وهيَّأ لنا فرصة الجمع بين المتنبي وأبي العلاء المَعَرِّي في رِحاب هذه الظاهرة النَّفسية.
