أخذت ملامحها تظهر وتتنامى بشكل دقيق ومنظم ومكثف منذ انطلاقة انتفاضة الأقصى المبارك في 28 أيلول 2000، لكن هذا لا يعني أن الكيان الصهيوني لم يستخدم الاغتيال قبل هذه الفترة. لا بل على مر الأزمان كان الاغتيال مستخدما، ففي العهود القديمة، ذكرت التوراة شواهد عدة، منها اغتيال أمنون، وعماس، وشبع بن بكري، وشلوم بن يابيش، وفقحيا بن منحيم، وأرجوب، وارية، وفقح بن رمليا، وأخزيا، ويواش وجدليا. أما في الأزمان المعاصرة، فقد تم اغتيال وسيط الأمم المتحدة السويدي برنادوت في فلسطين في 17 ايلول 1948، أي بعد أربعة شهور من قيام دولة الكيان الصهيوني في فلسطين. وفي الانتفاضة الفلسطينية الأولى التي انطلقت في 8 كانون الأول 1987، فقد تم اغتيال العديد من القيادات الفلسطينية المقاومة.
