يتعذر فهم الفكر الإجتماعي دون إدراك لتاريخ تطوره، وتلك حقيقة نقرها جميع الدوائر الأكاديمية، ومع ذلك فإن تاريخ الفكر الإجتماعي لم يكن ميدانياً شائعاً للدراسة بين سواد الناس، وإن كانت توجد كتب ومؤلفات قليلة في موضوع لها مكانتها العلمية ويدين جميع المتخصصين في علم الإجتماع لمؤلفيها بديْن عظيم.
والحقيقة أن الأفكار هي دائماً وفي الأساس نتاج لزمانها ومكانها، ولا يمكن النظر إليها منفصلة عن السياق الإجتماعي الذي ظهرت فيه وعن المجتمع الذي تفسره ومثلما يتغير المجتمع وهو في الواقع في تحول مستمر - كذلك فإن الأفكار لا بد أن تتغير أيضاً إذا أريد لها أن تحتفظ بأهميتها، والتاريخ هو الذي ينقل الأفكار لنا، لذا يقال إن التاريخ هو الأب الشرعي لجميع العلوم الإنسانية جميعاً.
وبالتالي، فإن محاولة التعرف على ملامح الفكر الإجتماعي في الحضارات القديمة تتوقف على حجم المعلومات والبيانات المتاحة عنها، وإمكانية تفسيرها تفسيراً ملائماً، خاصة أن المؤلف أهتم بالتركيز على نقطتين مهمتين في عرض الفكر الإجتماعي: أولاهما: التركيز على عرض الأفكار التي لها صدى مستمر وحديث، ثانيتهما: عرض الأفكار الإجتماعية والسياسية وتحليل العلاقة الجدلية بين الأفكار والبنية الإجتماعية التي تفرزها.
أما الفصل الثاني فيعرض لأهم ملامح الفكر الإجتماعي والسياسي في العصور الوسطى المسيحية، ويعرج الفصل الثالث على ملامح الفكر الإجتماعي بين عصر التنوير والإتجاهات الفكرية السائدة في علم الإجتماع، أما الفصل الرابع فيناقش نشأة علم الإجتماع إبتداءً من عبد الرحمن بن خلدون ودراسة العمران البشري ومنهجية دراسته.
ويأتي الفصل الخامس ليعرض أهم النظريات الإجتماعية السائدة في علم الإجتماع، أما الفصل السادس فيتناول تطور علم الإجتماع في مصر، أما الفصل السابع فيتناول أهم الإتجاهات الفكرية المعاصرة في علم الإجتماع.
